Characters In She Sttoops To Conquer And Antigone - 875 Words

The female protagonists in the plays â€Å"She stoops to Conquer† by Oliver Goldsmith and â€Å"Antigone† by Sophocles are successfully able to reach their goal by behaving according to their environment and behaving to the need of their situation. In the very well written play, â€Å"Antigone†, Antigone openly refuses to obey the king and buries the body of her brother, Polyneices. In the interesting play, â€Å"She Stoops to Conquer†, Kate Hardcastle makes it her goal to marry a man named Charles Marlow. It is her top priority since he feels relaxed in the company of lower class females. When Kate Hardcastle realized that Charles Marlow has a special preference for lower class females, Kate acts as if she is a lady belonging to a lower class and therefore†¦show more content†¦If you will not, I will; I shall not prove disloyal.† (A. 2). All along, Antigone very well understood that if she opposed the rules of Creon, she would most definite ly be killed yet she was determined enough to bury Polyneicies’s body. Antigone’s determination did not allow her be afraid to face Creon, instead she was courageous when he asked her â€Å"I am here to say no to you and die.† (A. 50). Also, Antigone’s determination is what is allowing her to believe that she has done the correct action even if others do not think so or think of her as a foolish woman as she states â€Å"think me a fool if you like; but it may well be that a fool convicts me of folly.† (A.49). Although Antigone did not obey Creon’s decree, she was very positive that she would not be called guilty as a traitor since she firmly stated that â€Å"no one will ever convict me for a traitor.† (A. 47). Throughout all of this, she remained courageous and determined so in the end she successfully reaches her goal in burying her brother’s body. In the play â€Å"She Stoops to Conquer†, Kate Hardcastle showcases the same amount of determination when she makes it her goal to marry Charles Marl ow.
